Meath council ‘cyberattack’ was just old-fashioned fraud

Meath council which became a victim of a popular type of scam which is usually sent to accounting staff in companies. The amount that Meath council lost is €4.3 million.

A short version of the story is that an employee at Meath County Council accounts sent a message to the company chief executive which the scammer got the email. That person is asked to transfer a large sum of money into an account. The money is duly wired to the scammers.
